Expatrio

blocked account provider

Last verified 2026-07-28

Expatrio is a Berlin-based fintech whose "Value Package" bundles a German blocked account (Sperrkonto) with public or private health insurance, free incoming/travel health insurance, a free Expatrio bank account with a digital debit card (Apple/Google Pay), and a digital ISIC card. The blocked account holds the visa proof-of-funds deposit (€11,904 for a 12-month student visa in 2026, released at about €992/month; €1,027/month for Job-Seeker/Opportunity-Card visas) and is opened online before arrival.

As of 7 July 2026 the service fee is €119 to set up plus €9/month (~US$10); health-insurance premiums are quoted separately. Unlike Fintiba, Expatrio ACCEPTS US-tax-status persons (US citizens and green-card holders), subject to FATCA reporting — making it a common choice for Americans studying in Germany.
