Expatrio
blocked-account-provider · HQ GermanyExpatrio is a Berlin-based fintech whose "Value Package" bundles a German blocked account (Sperrkonto) with public or private health insurance, free incoming/travel health insurance, a free Expatrio bank account with a digital debit card (Apple/Google Pay), and a digital ISIC card. The blocked account holds the visa proof-of-funds deposit (€11,904 for a 12-month student visa in 2026, released at about €992/month; €1,027/month for Job-Seeker/Opportunity-Card visas) and is opened online before arrival. As of 7 July 2026 the service fee is €119 to set up plus €9/month (~US$10); health-insurance premiums are quoted separately. Unlike Fintiba, Expatrio ACCEPTS US-tax-status persons (US citizens and green-card holders), subject to FATCA reporting — making it a common choice for Americans studying in Germany.
Why so few? FATCA requires foreign financial institutions to identify and report US-person accounts to the IRS — many simply decline US customers rather than carry the compliance burden. US persons abroad also keep FBAR (FinCEN 114) and Form 8938 filing duties regardless of where they bank. Acceptance policies change; confirm with the institution before relying on this list.
