Capitec Bank is South Africa's largest retail bank by customer count, headquartered in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape and regulated by the Prudential Authority under the South African Reserve Bank (SARB). Founded in 2001, the bank built its reputation on a transparent, low-fee model that disrupted the incumbents (Absa, FNB, Nedbank, Standard Bank) and brought millions of previously unbanked South Africans into the formal financial system. The flagship Global One account bundles transactional banking, savings, and credit into a single account at a flat monthly fee, with tiered interest rates on positive balances. All banking is managed through the Capitec app, USSD, or the bank's branch network, which spans 850-plus locations nationwide. Capitec is a domestic-focused institution: accounts are ZAR-denominated and applicants must be South African residents with a valid South African ID or an approved permit. Non-residents and US persons cannot open accounts remotely. The bank participates in the Corporation for Deposit Insurance (CODI) scheme. Business accounts (Capitec Business) launched in 2019 and cater to sole proprietors and registered companies with South African operations.
