🇸🇪 Pet Import to Sweden

Sweden, as an EU member state, follows the EU Pet Travel Regulation (EU) No 576/2013, administered domestically by Jordbruksverket (the Swedish Board of Agriculture). Dogs, cats, and ferrets entering from other EU member states must be ISO 15444-compliant microchipped, carry a valid EU Pet Passport, and have a rabies vaccination administered at least 21 days before travel. Up to five pets per person may travel under non-commercial rules; larger numbers require commercial import documentation. Puppies and kittens under 12 weeks that have not yet been vaccinated against rabies may only enter from EU countries or listed third countries where the owner can demonstrate the animal has not been exposed to wild animals. Pets arriving from non-EU listed third countries (such as the United States, Canada, and Australia) must meet the same core requirements plus an animal health certificate issued by an official veterinarian within 10 days of travel. Pets from non-listed third countries face additional requirements including an FAVN rabies antibody titer test and a three-month waiting period after a satisfactory result before entry is permitted. Sweden lifted its mandatory Echinococcus tapeworm treatment requirement around 2012, as tapeworm is not considered an endemic concern in Sweden as it is in Norway, Finland, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. No quarantine is imposed on compliant animals. Domestic dog ownership is governed by Lagen om tillsyn over hundar och katter; Sweden imposes no national breed-specific bans, though municipalities may regulate handling of dogs deemed dangerous. Exotic species are subject to CITES rules and the Swedish Environmental Code. All dogs resident in Sweden must be registered in the Jordbruksverket national dog register, a requirement separate from the import process. Border control is handled by Tullverket (Swedish Customs).
