Toronto General Hospital (UHN)

Toronto General Hospital is the flagship acute-care site of University Health Network (UHN), Canada's largest research and teaching hospital organization, and one of the most comprehensively resourced tertiary and quaternary referral centres in North America. Founded in 1829 and located in downtown Toronto's Discovery District, the hospital is consistently ranked among the top hospitals globally for its transplant, cardiac, and thoracic programmes. UHN's Multi-Organ Transplant Programme — headquartered at Toronto General — performs among the highest volumes of heart, lung, liver, and kidney transplants in the world, and the hospital has pioneered double-lung transplantation techniques that are now standard of care internationally. The Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, co-located on campus, integrates adult congenital heart disease, interventional cardiology, cardiac surgery, and cardiac rehabilitation under a single coordinated care model. Toronto General is affiliated with the University of Toronto's Faculty of Medicine, which means patients have access to subspecialty expertise across virtually every clinical domain. The hospital operates within Canada's publicly funded system for Canadian residents; international patients — primarily from the United States, Middle East, and Caribbean — access services through the UHN International Patient Programme, which coordinates visa support, accommodation, interpreter services, and cross-border insurance billing. Canada does not hold JCI accreditation as a standard since Accreditation Canada serves as the national equivalent; UHN holds full Accreditation Canada status.
