Vietnam

VNM

Vietnam is a fast-growing Southeast Asian middle-income economy with a low cost of living that attracts retirees, remote workers, and digital nomads despite the absence of a dedicated long-stay visa programme. Most foreigners enter on temporary residence cards via employment, business investment, or family of a Vietnamese national. Vietnam does not permit dual citizenship for naturalisation applicants except in narrow exceptional cases. Tax residency triggers at 183 days; resident individuals pay progressive rates up to 35%.

Common Risks

  • Xe om (motorbike taxi) drivers agree a price then demand more on arrival
  • Fake or rigged taxi meters running 3–10x the correct fare
  • Money switching — a high-denomination note swapped for a lower one during payment

Examples of areas to avoid: District 4, Ho Chi Minh City — nightlife area with elevated petty theft and tourist scams, Bui Vien Walking Street area, Ho Chi Minh City — highest reported rate of bag-snatching by motorbike, Long Bien night market surroundings, Hanoi — pickpocketing hotspot after dark
