Internet Speed & Digital Nomad Infrastructure by Country
Reliable, fast connectivity is the single most important infrastructure factor for location-independent workers. This table compares median fixed-broadband and mobile download speeds (Speedtest Global Index, full-year 2024), 5G network rollout status, Starlink availability, coworking space density, and whether a dedicated digital nomad visa exists — across the most popular remote-work destinations plus all G20 nations and Eastern European favourites.
Last reviewed: 2026-06-01. Speed figures are median Mbps from the Speedtest Global Index 2024 annual report. Visa income thresholds and conditions change frequently — verify with the official embassy or immigration authority before making decisions.

How to read this table
- Fixed DL / Mobile DL are median download speeds in Mbps from the Speedtest Global Index (Ookla), full-year 2024. Median figures represent typical everyday performance — not advertised maximums. Video calls require ~10 Mbps; 4K streaming ~25 Mbps; large upload workflows benefit from 100 Mbps+.
- 5G — Yes means nationwide or major-city 5G rollout is live with multiple carriers. Partial means limited to one carrier or major urban areas only. No means no commercial 5G service yet.
- Starlink — Banned means SpaceX Starlink is not legally authorised for consumer use in that country (Thailand, Vietnam, UAE, China). In most such markets unofficial dishes exist but carry legal risk. No means not yet offered in that market rather than banned.
- Coworking density is a relative measure. High means abundant options in at least one major city (100+ spaces nationally). Medium means several established spaces in major cities. Low means limited supply, typically only in the capital.
- Digital Nomad Visa refers to a specific visa category designed for remote workers. Many popular nomad countries (Argentina, UK, US, Norway) still lack a dedicated product — most nomads in those markets operate on tourist entry, Business Visitor leave, or general work permits. Income thresholds shown are approximate and subject to annual revision.
- Notable fast outliers: Singapore (292 Mbps), South Korea (271 Mbps), and Hong Kong (266 Mbps) top the global fixed-speed rankings by a significant margin. Romania (178 Mbps) and UAE (239 Mbps) punch well above their cost-of-living levels.
- Connectivity vs. visa trade-off: The highest-speed markets (Singapore, Korea, Japan, UAE) often require substantial income proof or lack a nomad visa entirely. Budget-friendly destinations with dedicated visas (Albania, Colombia, Georgia) typically have slower connectivity — though Starlink can bridge the gap outside cities.
