Austin

🇺🇸 United States

Austin is the capital of Texas and a leading US technology and startup hub, attracting relocators with no state income tax, a strong job market, a live-music and outdoor culture, and warmer weather than the coastal tech centres. Housing costs rose steeply in the early 2020s before easing somewhat. Public transit is limited and the city is largely car-dependent, though several central districts are walkable.

notes
Prices are approximate and softened from their early-2020s peak as new supply came online. Property taxes in Texas are relatively high, offsetting some of the no-income-tax advantage. Single-family homes with land are common outside the core, where prices per square metre fall notably.

Transport

  • • Ride-hail (Uber / Bolt)
  • Austin has no subway or metro; CapMetro runs buses plus a single commuter rail line (the Red Line) and rapid-bus routes. A light-rail project has been planned but is not yet built. The city is car-dependent for most trips. Uber and Lyft operate widely.

Expat community

Austin's international community is smaller than in the largest US cities but growing with the tech sector, drawing arrivals from India, East Asia, Latin America, and Europe alongside heavy domestic in-migration.
