🇻🇺 Pet Import to Vanuatu

Vanuatu is a rabies-free Pacific island nation and applies strict biosecurity controls to protect that status, similar in spirit to Australia and New Zealand. Import requires an advance permit from the national biosecurity authority, microchipping, and typically a quarantine period at an approved facility, with reduced quarantine possible for pets from other recognized rabies-free countries with complete documentation. Because Vanuatu has limited direct international routes, most pets arrive via connecting cargo shipments, which adds logistical complexity. Given the country's small administrative capacity, requirements and processing times can vary and should be reconfirmed directly with Biosecurity Vanuatu before shipment.

Requirements snapshot

Microchip
Required (ISO 11784/11785)
Rabies titer test

Vaccination requirements

  • Rabies vaccination (where applicable, plus titer test for non-rabies-free origins)
  • Core vaccines recommended (distemper, parvovirus for dogs; panleukopenia for cats)

Transport

Pets must travel as cargo with an approved freight forwarder into Port Vila, since Vanuatu has very limited direct air routes and no standard in-cabin pet policy. An import permit from Vanuatu's Biosecurity authority must be secured well before shipment.
