Hospital del Mar

Hospital del Mar is a publicly funded university teaching hospital located on the Barceloneta seafront in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, and has operated in its current form since 1914. Managed by the Parc de Salut Mar consortium, it serves as a primary referral centre for the Eixample and Sant Martí districts and functions as a major academic affiliate of Pompeu Fabra University and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. The hospital is internationally recognised for its research output, particularly through the Institut Hospital del Mar d'Investigacions Mèdiques (IMIM), which conducts epidemiological, cardiovascular, oncological, and neuroscience research. Clinical strengths include oncology, cardiology, neurology, psychiatry, emergency medicine, infectious diseases, and dermatology. Hospital del Mar played a nationally prominent role during the COVID-19 pandemic, becoming one of the leading centres for respiratory and critical-care response in Catalonia. International and EU patients accessing care through Spain's public health system can receive treatment at Hospital del Mar; private consultations and direct-pay pathways are also available for non-residents.
