Spain maintains particularly dense consular infrastructure in Argentina, where descendants of the early-twentieth-century Spanish emigration wave still number in the millions, as well as in France, Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, reflecting mid-century labour migration patterns. In Latin America, consulates additionally support bilateral cultural diplomacy through the Instituto Cervantes network. Spain's diplomatic corps operates under the political direction of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and is structured through geographic directorates-general within MAEC.
