Timor-Leste

TLS

Timor-Leste (East Timor) is a young Lusophone nation in South-Eastern Asia that gained full independence in 2002 after decades of Portuguese colonisation and Indonesian occupation. Portuguese and Tetum are the official languages, reflecting a deep cultural and institutional tie to the Lusophone world. The country uses the US dollar as its official currency and manages substantial sovereign wealth through the Petroleum Fund, built on offshore oil and gas revenues in the Timor Sea. Timor-Leste is an ASEAN candidate state actively pursuing full membership, which is expected to improve trade access and regional integration. The capital Dili offers a low cost of living by regional standards, though infrastructure and healthcare capacity remain limited. Naturalisation requires ten years of lawful residence; dual citizenship is permitted.
