Nauru

NRU

Nauru is the world's smallest island nation and the third-smallest country by area, an isolated raised coral atoll in the central Pacific. The island was strip-mined for phosphate throughout the twentieth century, generating significant wealth before reserves were nearly exhausted by the 1990s, leaving a landscape of jagged limestone pinnacles inland. Today Nauru's economy depends heavily on Australian aid, regional processing centre contracts, and limited fishing licence revenues. The country levies no personal income tax. Immigration to Nauru is extremely restricted and there is no formal residency or investment programme for foreigners. The Nauruan passport provides visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to approximately 89 destinations, including the Schengen area.
