Moldova

MDA

Moldova is one of Europe's most affordable countries, offering EU candidate status since June 2022 and a clear accession roadmap that makes residency here a long-term bet on eventual Schengen access. Chișinău is a compact, walkable capital with a growing startup scene and very low living costs — rent and groceries run well below most Eastern European capitals.

The Moldovan passport grants visa-free travel to the Schengen area under the EU liberalisation deal. Dual citizenship is permitted, and descent-based citizenship is available to those with Romanian or Moldovan ancestry. Tax rates are low, with a flat 12% personal income tax. The breakaway region of Transnistria operates independently along the eastern border but does not affect daily life in Chișinău or the west.

Common Risks

  • Unlicensed taxi drivers at Chișinău International Airport quoting flat fares two to three times the metered or app rate — use Bolt or a licensed dispatcher
  • Fake or adulterated alcohol sold in unlabelled bottles at markets and kiosks, particularly affecting budget travellers and rural areas
  • Romance and friendship scams targeting online contacts, asking for money transfers abroad — Moldova has a noted call-centre fraud industry
  • Overcharging at informal money-exchange booths on side streets; always use bank branches or official exchange offices and count notes before leaving

Examples of areas to avoid: Râșcani district northern fringe (Chișinău) — elevated property crime and poor street lighting after dark, Ciocana district outer blocks (Chișinău) — Soviet-era high-rise periphery with isolated streets; avoid late at night, Transnistria in its entirety — the breakaway strip (Tiraspol, Bender, Rîbnița) is controlled by a Kremlin-backed separatist administration; Moldovan/EU law does not apply, border checks are unpredictable, and Western governments advise against non-essential travel
