Lesotho

Lesotho is a small, landlocked constitutional monarchy entirely encircled by South Africa, making it one of only three countries in the world that are enclave states. At elevations mostly above 1,800 metres, it is the highest-altitude country on earth by average elevation, earning it the nickname the Kingdom in the Sky. The economy depends heavily on remittances from migrant workers in South African mines, textile exports, and water sales to South Africa via the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. Maseru, the capital, sits on the western lowland border. Infrastructure is limited, healthcare capacity is weak, and HIV prevalence remains among the highest globally. There is no formal residency-by-investment or digital-nomad programme. Lesotho is rarely a primary expatriate destination but may attract professionals in development, conservation, or cross-border trade tied to the Southern African Customs Union.
