Côte d'Ivoire

CIV

Côte d'Ivoire is the largest economy in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) and the world's leading producer and exporter of cocoa, accounting for around 40% of global supply. The commercial capital Abidjan is the region's financial hub and home to the headquarters of several international organisations. The country uses the CFA franc, pegged to the euro and managed by the Banque Centrale des États de l'Afrique de l'Ouest (BCEAO). French is the sole official language. Political stability has improved markedly since the post-election crises of 2010–2011, and the economy has grown at an average of 7–8% annually over the past decade. Dual citizenship is not recognised under current nationality law, and naturalisation requires five years of lawful residence.

Common Risks

  • Romance/advance-fee fraud ('419-style') targeting foreigners online and in person
  • Fake gem or gold deals in markets where sellers claim to offer export-grade gold at below-market prices
  • Overcharging taxis and unofficial moto-taxi drivers quoting inflated fares to newcomers

Examples of areas to avoid: Adjamé (Abidjan) — crowded transit hub with high rates of pickpocketing and petty theft, Abobo (Abidjan) — northern suburb with elevated gang activity and poor street lighting after dark
