Democratic Republic of the Congo

COD

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is central Africa's largest country and one of the world's most resource-rich nations, holding vast deposits of cobalt, coltan, gold, and timber. Despite this mineral wealth, it consistently ranks among the least-developed countries due to chronic governance failures, corruption, and decades of armed conflict. Eastern provinces — particularly North Kivu and South Kivu — remain deeply destabilised by dozens of armed groups including M23, which escalated a major offensive in 2024–2025 seizing Goma. Kinshasa is relatively more stable but suffers acute infrastructure deficits. The Congolese franc is highly volatile. Expatriate activity is predominantly humanitarian, mining-sector, or diplomatic. Naturalisation requires seven years' lawful residence and renunciation of prior citizenship, making the DRC essentially a closed path for most international movers.

Common Risks

  • Fake police shake-downs: uniformed individuals (sometimes genuine officers) stop taxis or pedestrians, allege minor infractions, and demand immediate USD cash payment on the spot.
  • Street currency exchange fraud: a friendly contact offers above-bank exchange rates, then palms banknotes during the count, leaving victims short-changed.
  • Express kidnapping by plain-clothes impersonators: individuals posing as security officers detain foreigners and escort them to ATMs to withdraw cash before releasing them.

Examples of areas to avoid: Matonge (Kinshasa) — dense bar district with high risk of muggings and motorcycle-gang theft after dark, especially on unlit side streets., Kasavubu (Kinshasa) — high crime rates reported by multiple expat sources, particularly after nightfall., Eastern DRC broadly (North Kivu, South Kivu, Ituri) — active armed conflict zones rated Level 4 Do Not Travel by the US State Department.
