UK Student Visa

United Kingdom GBR

Last verified 2026-07-20Official source

The Student visa (formerly Tier 4) is the UK's route for international students enrolling with a Home Office-licensed sponsor. Applicants need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from the sponsor, evidence of English proficiency, and maintenance funds -- £1,334/month for study in London or £1,023/month outside London, for up to 9 months, held for a consecutive 28-day period.

Holders may work up to 20 hours/week during term-time and full-time during vacations (10 hours/week for below-degree-level courses). The Immigration Health Surcharge, paid upfront for the full course length, grants NHS access from day one. Since January 2024, most taught postgraduate and undergraduate students can no longer bring dependants -- eligibility is now restricted to postgraduate research students (9+ months) and government-sponsored students on 6+ month courses.

On successful completion, graduates can switch, without a job offer or sponsor, to the Graduate Route: 2 years of unsponsored work authorisation (3 years for PhD graduates), widely used as a bridge into Skilled Worker sponsorship and eventual settlement.

Physical Presence
Maintain enrolment and satisfactory academic progress with the licensed sponsor; attendance is monitored and reported to UKVI under the sponsor's compliance duties. No day-count 'ties' requirement applies to the Student route itself (day-count rules apply later on settlement-track visas such as ILR).
Dual Citizenship

Tax Impact
Student route holders are generally UK tax residents if present 183+ days in a tax year under the Statutory Residence Test, but most students have little or no UK-source income beyond limited part-time work, taxed via PAYE. Non-UK income is largely irrelevant to typical student finances and most students have no meaningful UK tax exposure beyond employment income.
Renewal Cost

No income test, but applicants must show maintenance funds of £1,334/month (up to 9 months) for study in London, or £1,023/month (up to 9 months) for study outside London, held for a consecutive 28-day period, unless the sponsor certifies financial support or the applicant qualifies for the reduced 'differentiation arrangements' evidence requirements available to certain lower-risk nationalities.

Key Requirements

  • Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a Home Office-licensed Student sponsor, used within 6 months of issue
  • Course must be at an appropriate level (RQF 3+ for most institutions) delivered by the sponsor within its licence
  • English language proficiency at the level required by UKVI for the course (typically B2 CEFR for degree-level study; sponsors can certify this themselves for many universities)
  • Maintenance funds -- £1,334/month (London) or £1,023/month (outside London), up to 9 months, held for 28 consecutive days
  • Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) clearance for certain sensitive STEM postgraduate research courses, depending on nationality
  • Valid passport or travel document

Requirements
Student route visa duration is tied to course length (typically course length plus 2-4 months, depending on study level); a new CAS and application are required to extend for a further course of study. There is no simple 'renewal' of the same course visa -- it remains linked to the sponsor and CAS validity.

Gotchas — Things to Watch For

  • Dependants restricted since January 2024 to postgraduate research students (9+ months) and government-sponsored students on 6+ month courses -- most taught master's and undergraduate students can no longer bring a spouse or children
  • Immigration Health Surcharge is paid upfront for the WHOLE course length at the time of application -- a 3-year degree can mean £2,328+ due before you even arrive
  • CAS is tied to a specific sponsor and course; changing institution or course level generally requires a new CAS and a fresh application
  • 20 hours/week off-campus work cap applies during term-time even for courses that might otherwise allow more; breaching it is a sponsor-reportable compliance breach that can lead to curtailment of the visa
  • Graduate Route does not require a job offer or sponsor, but is fixed-length (2 years, 3 for PhD) and does not itself lead to settlement -- holders must switch into Skilled Worker or another route before it expires

What This Visa Does NOT Allow

  • ×Employment as a professional sportsperson or coach, or as an entertainer (except as part of a course-related work placement)
  • ×Permanent settlement -- Student route time does not usually count toward Indefinite Leave to Remain; holders must switch to a work or family route (e.g. Skilled Worker) after the Graduate Route to build a settlement-qualifying route
  • ×Self-employment or freelance business activity as a main occupation

Before You Arrive — Checklist

  1. Accept the unconditional offer and receive the CAS from the sponsor
  2. Build and hold the required maintenance funds for a consecutive 28-day period
  3. Obtain ATAS clearance if required for the course/nationality
  4. Complete the online application, pay the visa fee plus Immigration Health Surcharge, and book biometrics
  5. Attend the biometrics appointment at a visa application centre

After You Arrive — Checklist

  1. Activate the eVisa account (or collect the BRP, where still issued) within the specified window
  2. Register with the sponsor institution and complete enrolment/attendance checks (usually within the first 2 weeks)
  3. Register with a GP (NHS access is prepaid via the Immigration Health Surcharge)
  4. Apply for a National Insurance number if planning to work part-time
  5. Open a UK bank account

Conversion Paths

Can lead to

Common Rejection Reasons

  • CAS details don't match the application (course dates, sponsor, or fee amounts inconsistent)
  • Maintenance funds not held for the full consecutive 28-day period, or held in an account type/currency not accepted
  • English language evidence doesn't meet the required CEFR level for the course, or isn't from an approved provider
  • Genuine student credibility concerns -- course choice, prior immigration history, or study gaps that don't support a credible study plan
  • ATAS certificate missing for postgraduate research in a sensitive STEM subject where required by nationality

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Graduate Route and how long can I stay after finishing my degree?+

The Graduate Route lets Student visa holders who successfully complete an eligible UK degree switch, without a job offer or sponsor, to an unsponsored work visa: 2 years for bachelor's/master's graduates, 3 years for PhD graduates. It doesn't itself lead to settlement -- most holders use the time to secure Skilled Worker sponsorship before it expires.

How much can I work while studying?+

Most Student visa holders at degree level can work up to 20 hours/week during term-time and full-time during vacations; below-degree-level courses are typically capped at 10 hours/week. The exact limit is stated as a condition on the visa/eVisa and enforced through the sponsor's reporting duties.

Can I bring my spouse or children with me?+

Only if you're on a postgraduate research programme lasting 9 months or more, or you're a government-sponsored student on a course of 6 months or more. Since January 2024, students on taught master's degrees and undergraduate courses can no longer bring dependants -- a major policy shift aimed at reducing net migration.
