🇵🇹 Pet Import to Portugal
Portugal is an EU member state and follows the EU Pet Travel Regulation (EU) No 576/2013. Dogs, cats, and ferrets entering Portugal from other EU countries require a valid EU Pet Passport, an ISO-compliant microchip (15-digit, ISO 11784/11785), and a current rabies vaccination administered after microchip implantation. The rabies vaccine must be at least 21 days old on first travel. No quarantine applies for pets arriving from EU member states or listed third countries that meet EU equivalency standards. Pets arriving from unlisted third countries must present a rabies antibody titer test (FAVN test) performed at least 30 days after vaccination and no more than 12 months before travel, with results above 0.5 IU/ml, plus a minimum 3-month waiting period after a successful titer result before entry is permitted. An official health certificate endorsed by a government veterinarian is required for non-EU arrivals. Portuguese customs may request documentation at entry ports. Exotic animals, including reptiles, birds, and certain mammals, require additional CITES permits and may be subject to stricter import controls under national and EU wildlife legislation. Portuguese law also prohibits the import of certain dog breeds classified as dangerous. Pet owners should contact their airline well in advance as carrier policies on in-cabin pets, carrier dimensions, and fees vary. Portugal's continental territory, Madeira, and the Azores all follow the same EU framework, though island airports may have additional handling requirements.
