🇨🇱 Pet Import to Chile

Chile's pet imports are administered by SAG (Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero), the Agriculture and Livestock Service, which enforces strict biosecurity requirements to protect the country's unique endemic species and agriculture. Travellers must obtain a Certificado de Exportación Zoosanitaria (Certificate of Zoosanitary Export) issued by the competent veterinary authority of the origin country, attesting that the animal is healthy and meets Chile's import conditions. Dogs and cats over 90 days old must have a valid rabies vaccination administered no earlier than 30 days and no later than 12 months before travel; no FAVN titer test is required, as Chile has been free of canine rabies since 1972 and accepts vaccinated pets from rabies-affected countries without a titer. Microchipping is not a national entry requirement, though it is strongly recommended and increasingly standard practice. All animals must have received internal and external parasite treatment within 30 days of travel. There is no quarantine period for pets that arrive with compliant documentation. Personal import is limited to a maximum of two pets per traveller. Certain breeds are restricted under Ley 21.020 (Ley de Tenencia Responsable de Mascotas y Animales de Compañía), which limits ownership of pit bull terriers and dogs of similar bloodsport-bred lineage. Following entry, all dogs must be registered in Chile's national REGISTRATÓN de mascotas. Exotic species and wildlife are subject to CITES controls and Chile's Ley de Caza. SAG inspects animals on arrival at Santiago's international airport; a pre-arrival electronic health declaration via the SAG portal is recommended to expedite clearance. Travellers bringing pets to Easter Island (Rapa Nui) face additional and stricter insular biosecurity controls due to the island's ecological sensitivity.
