EES (EU Entry/Exit System)
immigrationThe EU Entry/Exit System is an automated biometric border-management system that records entry and exit movements of third-country nationals crossing into and out of the Schengen Area. Launched in a phased rollout beginning in October 2024 and continuing through 2025, the EES replaces manual passport stamps with digital registration, fundamentally modernising how the EU monitors short-stay visitor movements. The system captures two types of biometric data at first entry: a ten-digit fingerprint template and a facial photograph. This information is stored in a centralised EU database and linked to the traveller's passport or travel document. Subsequent entries and exits are electronically recorded, creating an automated trail that tracks each individual's presence across Schengen borders. A core function of the EES is enforcement of the Schengen 90/180 rule, which permits non-resident third-country nationals to spend a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area. Previously, enforcement relied on manual counting of passport stamps, which was labour-intensive and error-prone. The EES automates this calculation, flagging overstays and enabling border officials to deny entry immediately if a traveller has exhausted their allowance, substantially reducing overstay violations. The EES applies to all third-country nationals admitted for short-stay purposes, including visa-exempt visitors from countries such as the United States, Canada, and Australia. The system does not replace the planned ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System), which will launch in 2025 as a separate pre-travel authorisation requirement; rather, EES and ETIAS complement each other in the EU's layered border-security framework. Exemptions from EES registration include EU and EEA citizens, and holders of long-term residence permits (LTR status). Family members of EU citizens and others granted freedom of movement rights under EU law are also exempt. The system is designed to be transparent and accessible; travellers can request confirmation of their registered entries and exits through designated channels.
