🇹🇭 Pet Import to Thailand
Thailand's Department of Livestock Development (DLD) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives oversees pet imports. All dogs and cats entering Thailand must have an ISO 11784/11785-compliant microchip and a current health certificate issued by an official government veterinarian in the country of origin. Required vaccinations include rabies (administered at least 21 days before departure and within 12 months of travel), distemper, parvovirus, and hepatitis for dogs, and panleukopenia, rhinotracheitis, and calicivirus for cats. Parasite treatment is required within 7 days of travel. An import permit must be obtained from the DLD before the animal departs its country of origin. The permit application requires the health certificate, vaccination records, and owner details. Upon arrival in Thailand, pets are typically subject to a quarantine period at the government animal quarantine station. The standard quarantine is 30 days, though this may be reduced to as few as 10 days for animals from approved low-risk countries when documentation is complete and an approved veterinary facility is confirmed in advance. Quarantine fees apply and vary by facility. Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang Airport (DMK) both handle pet arrivals through their cargo terminals. Exotic animals, birds, and wildlife are strictly regulated under Thailand's Wild Animals Reservation and Protection Act and CITES. Import of certain species is prohibited. Owners should contact the DLD several weeks before travel to initiate the permit process and confirm current quarantine requirements.
