🇪🇸 Pet Import to Spain
Spain applies EU Pet Travel Regulation (EU) No 576/2013 for the movement of dogs, cats, and ferrets. Pets entering from other EU member states must carry a valid EU Pet Passport, an ISO 11784/11785-compliant microchip implanted before or at the same time as rabies vaccination, and proof of current rabies vaccination administered at least 21 days prior to entry. No quarantine is required for pets from EU countries or DEFRA-listed third countries meeting EU standards. For pets arriving from unlisted third countries, a rabies antibody titer test (FAVN method) is mandatory. The test must be conducted at an EU-approved laboratory at least 30 days after rabies vaccination and must show a result of 0.5 IU/ml or higher. A waiting period of three months from the test date is then required before Spain permits entry. A health certificate issued and endorsed by an official government veterinarian must accompany non-EU pets. Spain's Canary Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla are subject to the same EU framework, though travelers should verify any additional local requirements. Exotic animals require CITES documentation and may be restricted under Spain's national species protection laws. Certain dog breeds classified as potentially dangerous under Spanish law (Real Decreto 287/2002) may face restrictions or require additional permits for ownership and transport. Pet owners are advised to check with their airline regarding breed restrictions, carrier size requirements, and pet fees well ahead of departure.
