🇨🇾 Pet Import to Cyprus

Cyprus follows the EU Pet Travel Regulation (EU 576/2013), with the Department of Veterinary Services under the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment serving as the competent authority. All dogs, cats, and ferrets must be identified with an ISO 11784/11785 microchip implanted before, or at the same time as, the rabies vaccination. A valid EU Pet Passport (for pets from EU member states) or an official animal health certificate (for arrivals from non-EU countries) is required at entry. The rabies vaccine must be administered at least 21 days before travel and kept current. A maximum of five pets per traveller is permitted for non-commercial movements. Compliant arrivals from EU listed third countries present an animal health certificate; pets from non-listed countries must additionally provide a Fluorescent Antibody Virus Neutralisation (FAVN) rabies antibody titer test result of at least 0.5 IU/ml, taken no sooner than 30 days after vaccination and at least three months before travel. Quarantine is not required for arrivals that meet all conditions. Cyprus law designates certain dog breeds as dangerous under the Animals Law of 2002, including the pit bull terrier, Japanese tosa, dogo Argentino, and fila Brasileiro; owners must obtain special permits and ensure these animals are muzzled and leashed in public. Exotic species are regulated under CITES and the Cyprus Wildlife Protection and Management Law. Importantly, EU pet travel rules apply only within the Republic of Cyprus government-controlled areas. Northern Cyprus, administered separately, operates outside the EU regulatory framework and has its own import requirements. Commercial pet imports are subject to stricter veterinary controls beyond the five-pet non-commercial threshold.
