St Vincent's Hospital Sydney
Sydney, Australia
St Vincent's Hospital Sydney is a major public teaching hospital located in Darlinghurst, inner Sydney, operated by St Vincent's Health Australia under the Catholic Health Australia network. Founded in 1857 by the Sisters of Charity, it is one of Australia's oldest and most clinically distinguished tertiary referral hospitals. The hospital is affiliated with UNSW Sydney and the University of Notre Dame Australia, supporting a large portfolio of medical research through the affiliated Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. St Vincent's Sydney is internationally recognised for its cardiac surgery program, performing Australia's first successful heart transplant in 1984, and maintains a leading cardiothoracic transplantation service. Its oncology department — the St Vincent's Comprehensive Cancer Centre — delivers medical oncology, radiation oncology, haematology, and clinical trials. The hospital also holds a long-standing reputation in HIV and AIDS medicine, having been at the forefront of care since the 1980s epidemic. It operates a Level 6 trauma service, a 24-hour emergency department, and dedicated mental health inpatient units. As a public hospital, St Vincent's Sydney is funded under the New South Wales Health system and primarily serves Australian residents through Medicare; private patients are also accommodated in shared and single rooms. The hospital holds accreditation from the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACHS) and is a principal site within the St Vincent's Health Australia network spanning New South Wales and Queensland.
