Royal Hospital
Muscat, Oman
Royal Hospital is Oman's principal government-operated tertiary referral centre, situated in the Al Wattayah district of Muscat. Established in 1987 and administered by the Ministry of Health, it serves as the apex of Oman's public healthcare system, receiving complex referrals from district and regional hospitals across the Sultanate. The hospital offers a broad spectrum of specialist services including interventional cardiology, oncology with chemotherapy and radiotherapy units, neurosurgery, neonatal intensive care, and one of the Gulf region's few government-run kidney and bone-marrow transplantation programmes. With over 1,000 inpatient beds, it is among the largest hospitals in the Arabian Peninsula by capacity. Care at Royal Hospital is provided free or at heavily subsidised rates to Omani nationals and eligible residents; private-pay options are limited. The facility does not hold JCI accreditation but operates under Oman's Ministry of Health quality standards and the Oman Accreditation Council framework. Specialist consultants include Omani-trained physicians and expatriate specialists, predominantly from the United Kingdom, India, and Egypt. Expatriate residents with non-urgent or elective needs typically access private facilities such as Muscat Private Hospital or Burjeel Hospital, or travel to Dubai; however, Royal Hospital remains the primary destination for trauma and emergency cases across Muscat. Telemedicine services are not routinely offered to the public.
