Oslo University Hospital (Oslo universitetssykehus)
Oslo, Norway
Oslo University Hospital (Oslo universitetssykehus) is Scandinavia's largest hospital and Norway's foremost tertiary-care and academic medical centre. Formed in 2009 by merging four major Oslo hospitals — Rikshospitalet, Ullevål, Aker, and the Norwegian Radium Hospital (Radiumhospitalet) — it operates across multiple campuses in the Oslo metropolitan area and serves a catchment population of approximately 1.1 million. The hospital is the national referral centre for a broad range of highly specialised disciplines, including organ transplantation, cardiothoracic surgery, oncology and cancer research, neurosurgery, paediatric medicine, and rare genetic disorders. It is affiliated with the University of Oslo, making it one of Norway's principal medical research and training institutions, and hosts numerous internationally recognised research groups and clinical trials. Care for residents is covered through Norway's state-funded National Insurance Scheme administered by HELFO; EU/EEA nationals with a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) receive necessary treatment on equivalent terms. Non-EEA international patients are accepted for treatment but must arrange private insurance or self-pay; no dedicated international patient office exists on the scale of large private medical-tourism hospitals. All clinical staff communicate in English. The Rikshospitalet campus houses the national organ transplantation and cardiac surgery programmes.
