Clinical Centre University of Sarajevo (KCUS)
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Clinical Centre University of Sarajevo (Klinički centar Univerziteta u Sarajevu, KCUS) is Bosnia and Herzegovina's largest and most comprehensive hospital, serving as the principal tertiary referral centre for the Federation entity. Founded in 1948, it operates across multiple pavilions on the Kosevo hill campus in central Sarajevo and is affiliated with the University of Sarajevo Faculty of Medicine, making it the country's foremost academic medical institution. KCUS houses over 50 clinical departments and institutes covering cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, oncology, trauma, transplantation, obstetrics, and pediatrics, among others. The centre holds a pivotal role in postgraduate medical education and clinical research within the Western Balkans. Treatment for residents of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina is covered through the cantonal and entity-level health insurance administered by ZZO BiH; patients from Republika Srpska use the separately administered RFZO system. While formal JCI accreditation has not been pursued, the institution maintains accreditation under domestic standards set by the Federal Ministry of Health. Basic English-language communication is available in most departments, though the primary working languages are Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian. International walk-in patients are accepted at standard market rates; however, no dedicated international patient office currently exists.
