Second Passport
citizenshipA passport from a country other than one's country of birth or original citizenship, held alongside the first. Motivations include broader visa-free access, insurance against political or economic instability, tax or banking flexibility, and intergenerational mobility. Routes to acquire a second passport include naturalisation after residency, citizenship by descent (ancestry), citizenship by marriage, and citizenship by investment (CBI). Not all countries permit dual citizenship; some require renunciation of prior nationality, and US persons retain US tax obligations regardless of other passports held. The phrase is often used interchangeably with 'dual citizenship' but refers specifically to the passport document and its travel utility.
