🇷🇺 Russia — Embassies & Consulates

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation (МИД России) is the central body responsible for Russia's external relations and consular affairs. Headquartered at Smolenskaya-Sennaya Square in Moscow, the ministry oversees approximately 140 diplomatic missions worldwide, comprising embassies, consulates-general, consulates, and permanent representations to international organizations. Consular services provided through these missions include passport issuance and renewal, civil registration, notarial services, and assistance to Russian nationals in distress abroad. Russians residing overseas may also participate in federal elections through their nearest embassy or consulate. The agency Rossotrudnichestvo (Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States Affairs) operates a parallel network of Russian Centers of Science and Culture attached to many missions, serving the broader community of Russian compatriots abroad through cultural, educational, and social programs. Since 2022, Russia's diplomatic footprint in Western states has contracted significantly following reciprocal expulsions tied to sanctions and the war in Ukraine; several European countries and the United States have reduced Russian mission staff to minimal levels, and some consular sections have suspended public services entirely. In contrast, Russian missions in eastern and southern partner states remain fully operational and in some cases have expanded their role. Embassies in CIS member states, China, Iran, and Belarus maintain active consular and political engagement, reflecting Russia's strategic pivot toward non-Western partnerships. Travelers seeking consular assistance should verify current operating status and appointment availability directly with the relevant mission, as conditions remain subject to change.
