🇮🇹 Italy — Embassies & Consulates
Italy's foreign ministry, the Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale (MAECI), commonly known as the Farnesina after its Rome headquarters, oversees one of the world's most extensive consular networks. It serves an estimated five million citizens registered abroad through the Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all'Estero (AIRE), the mandatory registry for Italians living outside Italy. AIRE registration is the gateway to a wide range of consular services: renewal of identity documents, exercise of voting rights from abroad under Italy's absentee-ballot system, and access to civil-status certificates. Italy operates the Comites (Comitati degli Italiani all'Estero), elected advisory committees present in countries with large Italian communities that channel diaspora concerns directly to the government. The consular network is also the primary channel for jus sanguinis citizenship recognition — the process by which descendants of Italian-born ancestors, regardless of how many generations have passed, can reclaim Italian nationality. Because Italy imposes no generational limit on most jus sanguinis claims, consulates in the Americas — particularly in Argentina, Brazil, and the United States — handle enormous caseloads of descent-citizenship applications and are often booked years in advance. Prospective applicants are strongly advised to register with AIRE, gather apostilled civil records, and contact their competent consulate early. Italy's smart-traveler portal Viaggiaresicuri provides country-by-country safety advisories for Italian nationals travelling or residing abroad.
